I'm Back!

After what has been a whirl-wind week of ups, and downs, being crazy busy, and completely calm, I'm back.

Thanks for being patient with me!

At the beginning of last week I was 100% certain that I was pregnant, and had been for a few weeks. I was having all of the symptoms, and 1 out of 4 tests read a slight positive (for anyone who does not know what I mean, it means that one of the lines in the + sign was fainter than the other one.)

Anyhow, I made the best decision in the world to keep myself occupied with life, and to finish all that I have been putting off, and also in not letting myself get my hopes up, because I am not pregnant ;( anymore.

It's okay though, I'm alright with it now. I was, I'm certain, but only a few weeks along, so it could have been worse.

This has never happened to me before, and was shocking at the time. I started spotting ever so lightly on the day of my period, and then nothing for 4 days. On the 4th day, I began spotting again, all day. I thought perhaps this was normal, because some women spot slightly the first month that they are pregnant. It certainly wasn't anything near my normal heavy, aweful period. Until all of a sudden, it was the worst I've ever had.

Not to gross anyone out, but I feel it good to share the experience, that I just knew I was pregnant, because it looked as though there was a little more than just my "period" - if you know what I mean. Too much information, I know, but thought it good to share anyway.

I was devastated the day this happened, heart broken really, but then I remembered all the women that I know who have gone through worse, and I looked around at my beautiful family, and I knew it was going to be alright. Everything happens for a reason.

So, I have spent the week, with cramps, and aweful feelings, but have come to make a great decision in my life. I am not going to continue trying to get pregnant right away any longer, I want to give myself a bit of a break, and I'm going to do one of the last things that I've been meaning to do but have kept on the back burner in my life. I'm going to lose weight! In fact, I've already lost 5 pounds, and I'm on a great new diet, and exercise program which has really been all about eating healthier, and eating the right amounts of certain types of foods. An overall bettter lifestyle change.

My goal is to lose all my baby weight from my previous 3 babes, by
March. I have 35lbs to go.

When I reach my goal, I plan to go on a holiday with my hubbie to Florida if, and when I succeed - and without the kids, then we're going to start trying again!!!

I'm so excited about it, and it feels right.

I feel like I should have known that what I was doing with trying ti have a baby right away, was just not the right time for our family - 9 months from now, is not a great time for our family to have a new baby, and a year from now seems a whole lot better timing for us. That way there will be no stressing, and no rush.

So I'm happy to report that I'm happy. I'm glad I took the break that I needed (some other things in my life just had to take priority for a change,) and that I'm back, whether you like it, or not, you're stuck with me talking about good ol' sex, and motherhood!!

Now that my period is FINALLY over, man it was horrible, tonight is going to be made into a romantic, fun, and passionate one for hubbie, and I.

After almost a week and a half without sex, I tell you even little ol' me is getting kinda hungry for some lovin'!

Well, talk at you all later, thanks again for being so supportive, you gals- and guys are all so amazing!

Sexy Tip #10 For Moms

Use what you've got.

Let's face it, not many of us Moms have tons of money to throw around. These days some of us hardly have enough to pay the bills, and put food on the table with the way things have been going with the economy.

SO...use what you've got.

Sexy doesn't have to mean spending all kinds of money on fancy lingerie that you'll only wear once, it can be as simply as throwing on a T-shirt or apron on, and a pair of heels, and "sweeping" the kitchen floor. Add bending over discretely infront of your partner, and a quick grazing of your fingers up his arm to his lips, and you have created sparks of romance.

You might be surprised at how for some men, it takes very little to turn them on. And...for others, well maybe you need to use your imagination, but not your walet.

A Delightful Morning

There are so many nights where I can remember that I feel just way too tired to have sex. The night before last was one of them.

Fewf - I survived the day, I thought, as my head crashed onto my pillow, and I fell asleep.

My husband had not ventured to bed yet, he was busy fixing something, and when he finally got to bed I was long gone to Lala Land. Not even his best attempts at undressing, or dry humping could have woke me up that night.

I woke up, and he was gone to work.

Looking out the window, I actually felt sad.

When I got downstairs, I see that he left a little note:

Morning Darling,
You are so beautiful, and I love you so much. I hope that you had a good sleep.
XOXOX

Not having kissed him goodnight, or woke up with him, I wished I could just kiss him at that moment.

I raced to the phone thinking that maybe I could catch him. I got a hold of him.

Me: "Hi honey, I love you."
Hubbie: "Love you too."
Me: "What are you doing?"
Hubbie: "Going to work."
Me: "Want to come home maybe?"
Hubbie: "Why do you want me to come home?"
Me: "Oh I don't know......you know."
Hubbie: "Seriously?! I'll be right there."

The kids watched a movie downstairs, luckily the baby had not yet woken up, and we had a quick, but romantic morning together. It was utterly delightful.

Let's just hope he doesn't expect it all of the time! But, I do have to say, I think I prefer morning sex to the so-tired-I-can-barely-move-night-sex that my husband, and I have become accustomed to.

Strobing His Stuff

Like a kid in a candy store, my husband pranced...dare I say *pranced* across our kitchen floor when he arrived home from work just the other day bearing a small box. The box appeared to house some kind of electronic/man tool/boring thing.

I heeded no concern.

However, hubbie continued to look extraordinarily excited. I wonder at this point - should I be worried?

When he finally set the mysterious box on the counter, I picked it up to get a better look, and to see what all of his excitement was about.

Do you know what it was?

A strobe light.

My husband made a special trip to the hardware store, to buy a strobe light.

What are we hosting a kiddy dance for all the 2, 3, and 4 year-olds in the neighborhood that I don't know about (I don't recall being informed about this monumental event.)

Then, I realize - ahhh, it's almost Halloween!! That's why he got the light. That makes sense, he wants to set the Halloween mood for when the 1...maybe 2 trick-or-treaters come. Oh wait, we won't be home!

What is this silly forsaken thing for anyway, I wonder?

So I ask. Trying not to sound annoyed that he spent money on something frivolous, or concerned about his mental state.

Me: "Dear, why did you buy a strobe light?"

Hubbie: "Just cause."

Me: "Cause....why?" I say, smiling.

Hubbie: "It's Halloween, don't you know."

Me: "Oh I know, well that's great! So why did you buy it?"

Hubbie: "Okay, well when I was younger these babies cost like 100 bucks, and it was on sale, and I always wanted one."

Me: Trying not to laugh my buns off at how geekishly corny, cute he is.

I shake my head, and continue about my business.

Well, I tell you there was so recapitulating of the good Ol' days because of that strobe light, no Sir. No heart felt fond memories of the yesteryear's.

He did not buy it because he always wanted one. As I saw later from my view laying in bed, with my naked hovering husband jiggling, and wiggling his buns in the blinking light - he bought it because he always wanted to dance in the light of a strobe light naked, in front of a woman.

I feel so lucky - Hehum to be that woman. Now turn off the light so you don't fall down, and break something, and so I don't feel like the world is spinning.

This is the good stuff that memories together are made of. This is right up there with the liquorice butt.

Turn On The Romance

Okay, so I'm a corny, sappy, poo when it comes to romantic movies.

There's nothing like putting on a romantic flick to make me get in the mood. Which is a good, and a bad thing when it comes to my husband - because he LOVES it when I'm in the mood, but hates corny, sappy movies.

I'm almost certain that his eyes almost bleed at the sight of a romance set in the 1900's especially. I can hear him moaning, and groaning on the couch beside me as I watch Pride and Prejudice - and it's not because he's aroused in any manner, in fact I believe it has an opposite affect on him. The moaning and groaning more likely has to do with him having the need to regurgitate his supper.

So, I save watching these kinds of movies for when he's not around.

I'm not sure if all women are the same, but I tell you, it's movies like this one that make me smile at the thought that true love, passion, romance, and all that other sappy stuff used to - and still has the chance to exist.

Swooning a woman, and being so polite, gentleman-like, and so eloquent.

It all just seems so beautiful. And, if only we could capture a glimpse of that, and bring it into our everyday lives, well then in my opinion we'd all be ahead in our relationships, and our sex life.

If my husband only knew that if he studied these movies, even just a little - and took a few notes, why, he would be as sexy to me as I'll get out.

I am such a sap.

What other male movie studs make you drool?

Sexy Tip #8 For Moms

Keep It Clean.

What? - I thought that in Sexy Tip #7 For Moms , it was a good idea to enjoy the mess? Are we not being just bit hypocritical here?

No, we are not.

Sure, enjoying a mess is fun, there's nothing quite like a good clean mess.

But, be clean yourself is the point.

Because there is nothing more revolting to the majority of people than someone who stinks, tastes bad, or looks unkept.

I know that I am even guilty myself at times for not taking the 5 minutes I need to have a shower sometimes. Between looking after my 3 kids, our house, and everything else sometimes at the end of the day I'd rather fall into bed than take a shower.

Even though sometimes my husband might not take a shower, which is gross because his job has him sweating all day long, I don't mind.

However, when he is all cleaned up, and even in decent clothes, smelling oh so great, that's a big turn on, and I know that he feels the same about me.

Having good hygiene is a common courtesy that we should all extend to our partners, because without doing so we're saying that we don't care enough about ourselves, or them by taking the time that is needed to care for ourselves.

This should be common sense. If you were blindfolded would you be more attracted to the B.O. smelling man...or the mint fresh, washed one? Hmmm...let me think about that one.

Smelly man/woman go take a jump in the lake, and come back when you are clean.

Top 10 Turn-Ons For Men

Ladies get out your pens! It's time to take some notes.

According to men (at least many of the men that peruse the internet, and I'm not sure how reliable they might be), that despite the fact that what every man deems as "attractive" may differ from man to man, there are 10 things that nearly all men share in common when it comes to what turns them on.

I apologize in advance for going all Cosmo on you.

Here's the top 10 turn-ons:

1. Women that leave something to the imagination - Obviously. I knew men liked a low cut shirt, or shorter skirt, this is no news to me. I don't imagine my husband would be too keen if I flaunted everything I had in public, or even at home in front of friends and family, boobs and all though. That might be a bit awkward. So I suppose if you don't show it all, you are leaving some to the imagination, obviously.

2. Women that are not afraid to admit that they love sex - Well of course, if they won't admit it, they won't do it, and we all know that doesn't make a man too happy.

3. Women that have a strong sense of self-esteem - Absolutely.

4. Women that know how to talk dirty - Well if you don't shock them so bad that they run, they'll probably like it I guess. My husband would probably drool profusely if I used half of the vocabulary that he spills on me on a daily basis, even though I would rather he didn't

5. That love their bodies - I think my husband says "am I fat?" more than I do, and I probably have more % body fat than he does, actually I know I do. But, I love him regardless of his complaints.

6. That have an accent - I can relate to that. A few words of french, and my husband goes wild. Why? I have no idea. But, I can remember doing this soon after I met him. I said "Je veux te couvrer avec le sirop d'erable, et lecher ton corps." Pardoner moi, but I don't know where the accents are on my keyboard. For all of you who speak french, I'm sorry. Too much information, I know. For those of you who don't - it has to do with maple syrup, and my tongue.

7. That have a wicked sense of humor - Yes. Laughing, in, and out of bed can only do good things for your sex life, and your married life.

8. That are adventurous - One could argue about putting a cap on this one. Kinky, yes. Animals, another man, or any object whose function isn't apparent are going too far. Even for a man like my husband - way too far. Let's just stick with kinky...mildly kinky.

9. That are independent - If this means that my husband's going to be hot for me if I take time to give myself some love, hehem, he can forget it. I hardly have enough time to wash my hair. And, if it means that men like women who do "there own thing" in life, well I don't know about that. My husband gets a big pouty lip out, and whines worse than my 4 year-old every time I do something that doesn't include him.

10. That look like a centerfold - Forget it. I didn't before I had kids, and I won't after. So if my husband is one of these guys, well he best...forget it!

I found the original article here.

Just Like Fishing In The Dark

There is nothing like bait, worms, and slimy fish to make a Gal feel frisky.

Tehee.

Sometimes having sex in the dark is no different.

It's hard enough as a Mom to feel like you're really in the mood to want to have sex, let alone trying to set the mood in your dark room as you're both trying to be quiet, and not wake up the kids.

Not too long ago, it was a rather rare occasion that my husband, and I were both feeling kind of "in to it." Well, normally it's just him - yah I'll admit it....it's more often just him.

And when all appeared to be going smoothly - hook, line, and sinker, things took a turn for the worse.

I was the stinking fish, and I wasn't going to be reeled in, not this time.

As he fumbled with his lips, and started to kiss my nose, my eye, yanking on my hair, squishing me, head butting me, too much slobber - wait a minute, I've got this all wrong.

Come to think of it...he was the slimy fish. Yah, as I recall it was exactly what sleeping with a slippery, slimy, flopsy fish would feel like.

And then, the moment is lost entirely as he poorly judges which way to point his fishing pole, casting it too far down the river....ehhhum, if you know what I mean.

Well, that was the end of that. No more fishing for you Mr. Pokey.

Got to give the man some credit though, he can be tired too, but why not just admit it? Why not just go to sleep? Why half-attempt to do something that's only going to be awkward, unromantic, and well sloppy?

I guess men just can't give in sometimes...they don't want to be defeated.

By the way, not long after this attempt to reel in the big one...hubbie could be seen drooling like a sleepy puppy, no more fish.

Just What The Doctor Ordered

I was listening to a workshop called Change Your Brain, Change Your Life done by Dr. Daniel Amen, who is an expert on the human brain.

It's rather funny actually. It came on television between Mr. Rogers, and The Reading Rainbow. Who would have thought that myself, and my children would become so educated on the subject of the human brain while watching children's television?!

As I was cleaning up the house, okay - I was blogging!, and listening to it in the background, I picked up on something that struck me as funny.

Dr. Amen said that one of his patients had a wife that was always responding negatively to anything that the husband suggested.

So, the husband would ask. "Will you come to the store with me?"

The wife would respond. "No, don't you know how busy I am?"

So Dr. Amen recommended that he use a negative approach.

For example "I'm going to the store, but you probably don't want to come."

Naturally, she would respond. "I absolutely do, why wouldn't I? Don't you know that it's important to me to spend time with you?"

Dr. Amen proceeded to explain how exercise, good nutrition, and limiting your exposure to toxins, alcohol, and drugs can help to improve the health of your brain as well.

However, the husband explained that he was pleased with the results except for one remaining issue. How could he use this negative approach when it comes to his wife not wanting to have sex?

He couldn't exactly say "Dear I'm going to have sex, but I'm sure that you don't want to come."

So, Dr. Amen recommended that he go on a nice romantic walk with her (exercise), then give her a piece of dark chocolate (because it stimulates the brain to thinking that something exciting is going to happen), and that he touch her indirectly (not on the breasts, buttocks, or privates.)

Lastly, he recommended that the husband put a dab of baby powder behind his ears.

Why?

Because unconsciously, women are drawn to the smell of baby powder. It's apparently sexually stimulating for women because women associate the smell with fresh, newborn babies. Naturally, women want to have a baby, and therefore they will become sexual aroused at the smell.

I am sorry, but I burst out laughing as I imagined all of the husbands, boyfriends, etc. out there who were watching this program, as they ran to the bathroom to douse themselves in baby powder in order to get lucky!

White powder coated men, prancing around in my head, drooling in anticipation of having sex.

Can't wait until my husband gets home, to let him know about this little secret that could possibly be the answer to our problems in the bedroom, haha.

A Mommy Minute

Excuse me Honey. But don't come up from behind me, and hug me as I'm changing the babies diaper.

Yes, I love you.

Yes, I'm happy to see you.

But, no I do not want baby poo under my finger nails, and smeared up my arm.

Feeling Beautiful - It's Up To You

In spite of the fact that your partner may think that you're beautiful, it's so important for you to feel that you're beautiful as well.

Many women, especially Moms are posed with a challenge after giving birth, of trying to re-establish a healthy relationship with their own bodies again, and to feel truly beautiful.

Sadly, some women don't even feel beautiful to begin with, before they have kids, let alone after.

Regardless, we as Women, and Moms are all faced with this challenge at some point in our lives.

I can remember the day I got home from the hospital after giving birth to my first baby. I was just getting undressed, and about to get into my pajamas when I caught a glimpse of my body in the bedroom mirror.

The horrific image that I saw will forever remain etched in my brain

The skin of my belly drooped to my groin. If I had hair there before, it was hidden undercover of the fold of my stretched belly skin like the saggy chin of a bull dog.

My thighs, and hips emitted bright purple streaks like I got run over by a train on my way home from the hospital.

And, what was worse was that my belly when looking sideways, okay even frontwards, still looked like it had a baby inside of it.

Overall, it didn't help that I was 60 pounds heavier than I had been pre-baby, and that I would still be sporting maternity clothes for months to come.

That, to me was a pivotal point in my life, when I felt that I was at my ugliest.

Three babies later, and still I find it hard to look into the mirror right after giving birth. It wasn't until after my third that I decided to face my fear.

I made the decision to love myself, period.

Standing there in front of that same mirror - with my body looking honestly worse than after the first time that I gave birth, I promised myself I would never again call myself "fat," or "ugly."

I wouldn't move from that spot in my bedroom until I decided that amidst the bulge, the stretch marks, and the jelly-jiggling belly that I would love myself. "As Is."

I don't feel comfortable sporting a garter belt, stockings, thongs, or anything uncomfortably revealing any more (most of the time). Not because I don't look hot to my husband - laugh, laugh, but because it doesn't feel good to me.

The sexy, beautiful me that used to exist before kids, has not disappeared, but rather has just changed - just a bit.

I've come to realize that feeling beautiful is a matter of feeling comfortable, and happy with myself.

And, to my rejoice, my husband finds me even more attractive in the plain white tee shirt, or his boxers and a tank, or even in nothing at all.

Because I feel like I am beautiful, it shines through.

It's so much easier to enjoy sex, to be passionate, and to love making love when you feel beautiful.

Being a woman is an incredibly powerful thing.

The curves, the soft skin, the feminine features.

No reason why being a Mom should prevent you from batting your lashes, or bending so eloquently in front of your partner to pick something off the floor. Or even, reaching over him while he's seated to try to reach for something. All in a flirtatious way.

Females flirt to find a partner. Then comes baby. Task accomplished. And, the flirting stops.

Moms, I say flirt on!

I'm no where near having a head that's about to pop off because of how hot I think I am, but I am making steps forward in loving my body again.

No more beating myself up over it.

Giving birth, having a baby, motherhood - it's all a beautiful thing.

Mother's are beautiful.

Decide you are beautiful, it's up to you.

Sexy Tip #7 For Moms

Enjoy The Mess.

Why stress? We all do most of the time. The laundry needs to be done, the kitchen tidied up. Why not let it be messy - every once, and a while...and enjoy it?

Besides, some days you can't beat em' anyway - so if you can't beat em', join em'!

There's nothing more satisfying, and ridiculously fun than having a food fight with your partner, or a water fight.

Think it's crazy? Well, somedays if you walked into my house you wouldn't know if a bomb of food went off anyway. My kids spill more drinks, snacks, and meals in a day than I can keep track of regardless of me cleaning up.

So a little extra cleanup won't be that much harder to do.

My personal favorite is eating fruit like strawberries, blueberries, and rasberries, and pudding some extra whipping cream on my husbands nose for fun. He gets me back, of course. Or icecream.

He falls for it every time that I over him a lick from my icecream cone, and my hand "slips" upwards to get his nose every time.

Whatever you do, make sure you be playful every once and a while, just you and your partner. It certainly does help to minimize all the other stressors in your life, and keep things from getting dull in your relationship.

Sincerely,

Mama of Romance

Mile High In The Mountains?

So it's the last day of our vacation, and we decided to go hiking up a mountain. Nothing like tiring a Mom out, just before coming home to a week worth of laundry, messes, and excitable kids.

We were hoping to rock hound a little for some semi-precious gemstones that are local to the area, or perhaps uncover some fossils to give to our kids, but we came back empty handed.

The heat was overpowering, and the hike was exhausting. But we finally got to the top.

As we sat there, looking 360 degrees around us, the breeze blowing on our faces, I thought "Wow, it doesn't get any better than this."

And, as I turned from looking at the amazing view, and our astonishing solitude, I looked at my husband.

His face said it all: "This is great - but, there's one thing that would make this perfect."

I shook my head, because I knew the look on his face meant that he wanted to have sex.

No, no, no, no, no.

What, here on the mountain top, on the edge, where when you look down it drops straight to the bottom?

Sure, like making love at home with the kids interrupting our intimate time isn't awkward enough!

I can handle tip-toeing toddlers, but sex on a ledge covered with bird poo, uuugghh.

Looking at him, I thought, "Wipe that smirk off your face Mr., you are so not getting any."

But then I looked around us again, and it hit me.

Not only were we completely alone for miles, and miles, but this could possibly be our only time ever to be together to enjoy ourselves alone, without interruption, and in such a place of beauty.

Not like we can ever hike up this kind of a mountain without our kids when we go home - there are no mountains like this at home!

Okay, so I caved, I gave in, I folded - after all, he lucked out on the plane ride here, and I knew he wanted it sooo bad.

Blushing still, I can't believe we did it.

Sometimes I think that the most healthy thing for a relationship is to do the things that you're least likely to do, and to make amazing memories together.

Just because I'm a Mom, doesn't mean that every day has to be ordinary, it can still be extraordinary too (sometimes).

Mama of Romance

____________________________________

Waking, I have a severe headache, I’ve had one for weeks. I get out of bed, and get dressed, gather my things, hop in the car, go pick up Mom, help her into the car, and away we go again.

Arriving at the entrance, I walk her in, get her into a wheelchair, park the car three blocks away, and run back to her. I push her down the hall with the artwork, and leave her in the care of the nurse with smiley faces on the fluorescent tie-dyed uniform.

Sitting in the waiting room, I crochet, trying to finish the blanket that I started for Mom when this whole mess began. Double, double, double, double, skip two, double, double, double, double, three doubles…. Until finally my hands are stiff, my finger callused, and my eyes now tired begin to close.

I can still see his old blue, and rusty Oldsmobile slowly pull into the driveway as I awoke from that long fixated gaze. The sound of the gravel resonated through the entire house as it was being flicked up, and tossed by the turning wheels of his car. I jumped up, and briskly paced around the room, nervously pulling down on the bottom seam of my shirt, and pushing back my neatly brushed hair. Regaining my composure, I focused on what I was about to say. Finally, the doorbell rang. As I opened the door, leaning against the door frame stood my drunken father about to fall forward on top of me, with a smug smile on his red face. The tears started to well up in my eyes, but I forced them away, took a deep breath, and without a second thought I loudly said:

“Dad, I can’t believe you. You’re drunk. What are you thinking? Driving all the way out here? You think I’m going to go with you? Like this?”

My father stood upright, and under his breath, stinking of scotch, he mumbled

“Fine - don’t come with me…I’ll just drive home by myself.” His words were slurred. He stood for a moment as if frozen, waiting for his body to follow his mind’s instructions to turn, and walk away. The lapse in time for him to react truly reflected how terribly drunk he was. His eyes were glazed over with a cloudy film, and blood shot. He made me so angry, he wasn’t even looking me in the eye. Then turning slowly, scraping his shoulder alongside the stone exterior of the house, he staggered down the front steps, almost falling onto the concrete. Surely he’d be scraped, and bruised tomorrow. As he continued windingly down the path, his body slumped, and in clothes that he had probably worn all week, I felt sickened. How could he really be my father?

I didn’t know what to do. Smart enough to know better than to drive with him in his state, I thought: what about all the other cars on the road? What if he killed someone - a whole family, an old lady? I couldn’t live with that. And, as astonishing as it was, I also loved him too much to let him go, and I was unable to bare the thought that I might lose him. Like my mother, I wanted desperately to help him, even if he was beyond all help, and even though I knew I couldn’t change him. Upon any opportunity in the past however, I was eager to try to save him, and change him, and each time I failed, miserably. Wiser than my years, I knew better.

However, I was only twelve years old. I should have stopped right there, ran back into the house, picked up the phone, and called the police. But instead, I ran after him. I pulled open the beat up passenger side door, and threw myself into the filthy seat. Before I could even put on my seatbelt, my dad had slammed on the gas, was darting out the driveway, and onto the highway. I was scared.

“Dad, pull over!” I yelled. But he didn’t hear me. He looked so angry. He was starring straight ahead, and driving way too fast.

“Pull over!” I screamed. The tears were now pouring out of my eyes.

“You’re going to kill someone!” I exclaimed, but my demands went unanswered.

Forcing myself to a calm, I quietly said, “we could die” as I gently pulled on the sleeve of his plaid, worn shirt. Tears continued to pour down off my face. But his firm grip didn’t loosen off the stirring wheel, his knuckles were white as he squeezed the wheel with all of his strength. He was in an entirely different world, and had no idea that I was even sitting there, right beside him.

The expression on his face frightened me. A memory of that exact same face now displays in my mind.

I was tucked into the top bunk of my bunk beds when I heard my mom, and dad yelling at each other, again. I can picture the view from atop those bunks looking past my flowery comforter, and past my lilac coloured room, whose colour had darkened in the evening light. Streaming from the hallway came a path of light, and the loudening voices. I was used to hearing them yell at each other, it happened almost every day. Mom was always mad at him because of his drinking. Even at four years old, I knew it wasn’t normal to see my father passed out on the couch, sometimes even before supper.

Tonight the yelling was really bad. It normally slowly came to a calm with mom storming off into her room, and the door slamming shut. Instead it kept escalating, and I sat up straight in my bed to listen to the fight. My father’s voice was full of anger, then it escalated to rage. I tightly clasped onto my blankets, and to my doll, Nina. He began to yell so loudly that he was gasping for breaths. I had never heard my father get this angry before. He was a quiet man, never yelling at me - no matter how mad he was.

All of a sudden there was silence. Normally that would assure me that the fight was over, but tonight something was different. Tonight the silence struck me with fear. I climbed down from my bed, and ran to the kitchen. It was as if by mere instincts I was being driven forward, knowing something was terribly wrong. I’ll never forget what I saw, ever.

My father was on top of my mother, with his legs on either side of her waist, holding her neck between his strong, tensed hands, and banging her head violently on the floor, over, and over, and over again. Her head was beating down on the floor like a drum. He was going to kill her. I ran over to him, and without even thinking, I’m not sure if it was out of fear, or desperation, but

I crouched down on the floor, and bit his ankle so hard that he let out a loud piercing scream. He let go of my mother instantly, and jumped up. In one swoop, he picked me up, and carried me across the room, opened the garage door, and dropped me on to the cold cement floor.

I never beat on anything as hard as I beat on that door. And I never screamed louder than I screamed for him to let me in. It seemed like forever that I stood outside that door. I didn’t know if my mother was alive or dead.

“She’s all done now. She did well today,” says the nurse in the green frog print uniform. Bringing myself back to reality, I put my crocheting in my bag, take Mom’s arm, and help her into the wheelchair. I push her down the hall covered with the art work, to the door.

“I’ll be right back Mom. Try to rest.” I say, as I walk out the door, and run to the car. The cool breeze hits my face. All I can hear is the sound of my feet beating down on the pavement. I pick up my mom, take her home, and go home myself.

The next day, I get up, and do the same. Sitting down in the waiting area, I get out my crocheting, and continue to work on her blanket. It’s white, and I think it has a heavenly design.

I hope I can finish it on time. A half hour passes, I’m tired again, and I close my eyes.
I remember waiting in that garage for what seemed like forever. The door flew open, and I fell inside the house. But it wasn’t my father I saw, it was my mom. She grabbed me, and quickly ran with me in her arms to the car, putting me inside, and handing me the seatbelt, signaling me to buckle up.

“I’ll be right back. Don’t move,” she said. I didn’t move, or breath. I sat, starring at the door., wondering if I’d ever see her again.

The next time I saw my mother, it was when she came flying out onto the cement floor of the garage face first. My father kicked her in the tail bone so hard, that for the rest of her life she would have bladder problems, and severe lower back pain, but that was the least of her concerns. We got away, we were safe now, and we were both alive.

So when my mom told me that my parents couldn’t be together any more, that was ok. In fact, I thanked God that they weren’t together any more, and that I still had my mom here to look after me.

I remember, with all my heart sitting in that car, I wished Mom was with me, to get us all out of that terrifying situation. She would have know what to do, she probably wouldn’t have gotten into the car in the first place.

The car swerved back and forth along the road, flirting with the center line. I wondered if these would be the last few moments of my life. I felt totally helpless. Then as the car veered too close to the left, an on-coming truck honked his horn at us. But it didn’t even phase my father. He continued to stare out the windshield, at what I don’t know.

Again, I tried to think of what I could do, but found myself now totally overwhelmed with a fear that was simply paralyzing. Like a dream, I could vaguely see another oncoming car abruptly jerk to the side, and just miss us by traveling half on the gravel shoulder of the road. I sat there in a daze, with my eyes fixed on the road, tears streaming down onto my chest. The car was now completely over the center line, and we were going around a bend. I closed my eyes praying that another car wasn’t coming around the corner, imagining.

I would never see the car that hit us. My father stands over my coffin at my funeral, and promises to never take another drink again. He lives the rest of his life sober, but alone, in a deep depression, unable to face what he did.
I open my eyes quickly, and all of a sudden as if by some saving grace, I know exactly what to do to avoid the crash. As soon as the passenger side door opens, my father’s unwavering stare is broken, his attention finally no longer concentrated into total nothingness, and he looks over at me, panicked.
“What are you doing?” he asked.

“I’m getting out, you’re crazy, I want out” I said.
“Shut the door, the cars moving” he barked.

“I want you to stop right now, or I’ll jump out, and it will be your fault if I get hurt.” I said severely, and I meant it.

“Get in, get in.” he urged, as the car began to slow, gradually moving to the side of the road. I still kept the car door open. Just then a big transport came sailing around the corner a little on our side of the road. I could feel the immense gust of wind. I began to tremble, and started bawling my eyes out, knowing that just as I had imagined, in an instant, we could have died. The car was now completely stopped, and my father was sitting slouched in silence, looking down at his lap, his mouth slightly open, and eyes wanting to close. Rage filled me. How could he be so irresponsible, so stupid!?

“Are you out of your mind! We could have been killed!” my voice echoed from its’ intensity. I never knew I could get so mad.
“Dad, get out of the car.” I demanded.

My father looked up at me with a blank stare on his face, about to cry and with his shivering lips quietly he whispered “I’m sorry.”

He got out of the car obediently, and walked around the hood of the vehicle, using it for balance.

Climbing into the passenger side, with a clunk he fell into the seat, and he began to weep. I’d never driven a car before. I learnt quickly - I had to.
When we arrived at his house, I darted up to my bedroom, and sat in anger on my cat-hair covered, mismatched bedding thinking about what I wanted to say to my father once he sobered up. Downstairs, he passed out in his ratty old green, fake leather armchair, snoring.
